Perak Close 2011

It was a two day tournament with 9 round and a 45 minute time-control. It was held at SMK Seri Putera Ipoh. A tournament that was anticipated by all Perakian Chess player. A very strong crowd turn-out, where the winner will be crown as Perak State Champion of the year. I hope someday the privilege will be mine.

Saturday 17 December 2011.

Woke up late that day, not really feeling well with headache and tiredness of last night function. Went to the tournament venue with three of my nephew. Months before I have set a goal to get top 5 in this tournament but with things that came up suddenly, I didn't do any prep or studying for this tournament. So I didn't put much hope in getting any prizes.

Today it will have four round than the expected five because of the late start. But tomorrow it will be five round and it will start early, at 8.30am.

Round 1 : table 5 (Black)

Ha ha ha .. I was paired against my nephew ( Eizhan Ishal ) we played for 13 move and a Grandmaster Draw

Round 2 : table 17 (White)

My opponent is a girl name Thanusha. It was a quick game where she blundered a pieces and then her queen.

Round 3 : table 10 (Black)

I was paired against miss Shankari. In the opening i was up a pawn. in the middle i tried a tactic by sacrificing my knight which will resulting with me capturing her Bishop/Rook and a pawn.But she played correctly and force a queen exchange resulting with me having a worse position. She did get back her pawn with a nice tactic that i miss but she overdid herself by taking another pawn and giving me a king to bishop fork. With a pieces up, I won the game.

Round 4 : table 6 (White)

I was paired against State Junior girl player miss Yee Mee Yee. She played my pet Defense the KID. She played a few inconsistency resulting in giving me a tactic where I have a piece up.


at this moment she played 11. .. b5? i played 12.Bd5 Rb8 13.Bc6!


So at the end of the day I got 3.5 point.. Alhamdulillah.

Day 2 Sunday 18 Dec 2011

Feeling better today. Woke up early and take some time to look up some variation. I knew today will be a tough one. I didn't know who will be my opponent for today because i didn't stay yesterday. Hoping for the best.

Round 5 : table 5 (Black)

It turn-out I was paired against Pak Mie, a National Police Chess player and he also one of  my chess Buddies at Limau Bali Tambun. We actually know each other move, where I recorded 2-3 move ahead. But he deviated from his normal move of Bc4 to Be3. Hmm maybe he did special prep against me. He also have a dangerous looking Knight on g3. I manage to exchange the g3 knight and sadly my white square bishop. I did have a very strong pawn storm at king-side and Pak  Mie tried to find some counter-play on the Queen-side. I saw a knight sac and it took almost 10 minute to think on it. Pak Mie decline the knight leaving me with a nice open file toward his king-side. At the end I was up a piece and few pawn but our time is very low. I won on time.

Round 6 : table 3 (White)

I was paired against Mr Johan a chess coach and a state player. He was late for 10 minute. I played d4 and he countered c5 then he played a weird move d6 and g6. we ended in exchanging all pieces except one rook. We agree on a draw.

Round 7 : table 2 (Black)

My opponent is Mr Fong Yit San. He's a State payer and the Champion brother. My previous encounter with him was 1W and 2 losses. He still played e4 and I countered with Pirc Defense. I misplayed my opening where I should played c6 but I played c5. I ended up with worse position where I had to defend against his attack. The pieces are balance but with me having an inferior position and the he found a mating threat and I had to exchange my Rook for his Knight and pawn. I lost on time.

Round 8 : table 5 (White)

I was paired against another Junior State player name miss Akmal. At that time i was already tired of all the long game that I played. The break between round is less than 10 minute. I played d4 she played Nf6. I make a mistake resulting a losing a pawn. I won back a pawn later on but giving my opponent the initiative. She had a very strong attack towards my King. Then she exchange her rook for my Bishop, I think she saw a tactic that wasn't there. Then I saw a tactic that could give me an advantage . She ended up losing her Queen and all her pieces. It was a hard game .. I won.

Round 9 : table 4 (Black)

I was paired against a school teacher named Mr Mohd Fadzil. Less than 5 minute table 1-3 and 5 all agree for a draw. I played KID and he played Bf4 and e3 system. I found a move that let his Rook being captured. Then I exchange both of my Knight resulting in doubling his b pawn. Even though I had 2 rook and a Bishop he had 2 Bishop and 1 Rook  I had a hard time finding the right move. There's no open file for my Rook and my bishop is bad. I should activated my Bishop first !!!. At the end he Blundered and give me a Free Rook. He Resign after a mating threat ..

Alhamdulillah .. A good tournament for me .. Didn't really thought I'll achieve top 5 . Result 6W 2D 1L . I was Fourth overall. Syukur ....

MAKSAK 2011 Selection

Sunday 26 June 2011, Stadium Indera Mulia Ipoh. The selection was a tough one, with 30 minute time control and 5 round swiss pairing. Around 25 players from all around of Perak come for the selection. This was a really tough selection, every one of them is a strong player.

I was seeded number two based on current national rating. Number one is Muzzaffar, our strongest player. On the first game i was paired with Mr. Azman who is currently my state disable chess player. And just return from national disable chess tournament and got third placing.

The first game with me playing black. Mr Azman played KID Attack, I miss calculated in the middle game and lose my passed pawn advantage. But in the end i got one point from him.

The second game i played a newcomer but i wont underestimate him because he also got one point. In the game i was up a pawn and then i got a free queen !! a serious blunder from my opponent. The game is mine from then on.

Third game, i was paired against my former teammate. ha ha ha we agreed on draw. Grandmaster draw huh..


Fourth game, i was paired with another of my former teammate. We both couldn't draw because of possibility of the other player catching up to us. We both have 2.5 point. I played white. I played d4, and Mr Khatib played KID !! , my pet defense and i guess he just studied the defense because last year he played sicilian or nimzo . I won the game and i could relax with 3.5 point.

The fifth round i meet up with another of my teammate. We agree on draw in the middle game. the game was even with many possibility.

I ended up with 4 point. This guarantied a place in the team. Three people got four point in this selection, all of them is my former teammate. I got third placing because of my lowest tie-break .

Kampar Perak Grand Prix

This tournament was held on the 19th June 2011. The venue was at Grand Kampar Hotel with 187 participant. It was a huge turn out. People from k.l and Penang also came, there are  also few national player. Fuh !! with huge crowd and strong players, I didn't put my hope high on any prizes only to train for my MAKSAK selection next week.

I was seeded 9th overall. On the first round i played as black (table 9), i meet with a kid in his first tournament. I won , and the kid ask for few pointers in improving his game . Second round (white, table 9) i meet with a school teacher, I won the game.

The third round (Black, table 9 ) I meet with another kid but he won gold in state selection this year and i was playing carefully. He ask for a draw when i was about to launch my attack. i decline and won the game.

The fourth round ( white, table 9) I was already tired. we played and the game is balance and i was leading in time. until suddenly i saw the clock and realise i was down in time. we played and both of us in time trouble and my time ended with his 7 second .. he he he here's the final position with me to move

On the 5 round (black, table 8) I meet with Mr Radin who has previously drew with my MAKSAK teammate. I won on time.

The 6th round (white, table 6) the first women i meet that day. She's from the strong Fong's family. She blundered and i won the game.

The final round (black, table 6). I got to meet Mr Rahim. He's a strong player and has beaten one of my MAKSAK teammate in the previous round. I played cautiously. Mr Rahim did a tactic but it backfired and i was up the exchange with a strong attack. Took me few minute and i find the best move that lead to a fork of his pieces. by this time i was up 1 pawn and one pieces. I maneuver and got another 2 pawn for my 1 pawn with the chance to promote. I tried to exchange queen and he tried to fork my queen, we maneuver and i got my king to safety and a strong attack toward his king. Mr Rahim was out of time and i won the game. The final position with white to move ..

 I ended up with 6/7 point and prizes for 7th placing by having the lowest tie break. Well it was a good tournament. I didn't expect to get any prizes because of the many strong player in the tournament .. Alhamdulillah ..

Lasah 2011 chess tournament

It was held on the 29th May 2011. It was long drive, we reach the venue at 8.30am. It was an unexpected turn out with 120 participant. The organizer only close the registration at 9.45am. It was 7 round with 20minute time control.

I went there with my nephew, he's on school break. Round 1 started around 10.15am. I was paired with a strong opponent, it seem both of us didn't inform our rating.. ha ha ha .. luckily I won. On round 2 is was paired with another strong opponent, he was the unofficial Lasah champion . He make a mistake by offering his knight for my 2 pawn and a very strong attack to his uncastle king.

By this time i was 2 point but as it turn out for my nephew he meet up with both of my previous opponent, he lost and he's already feeling down.

Game 3, I was paired with a kid for U15 . I won the game. Game 4 I was paired with another U15 . never underestimate those guy as they have the same point as i did. So far i was having a good tournament with no loss. And my nephew got back his rhythm and keep winning his game. I so far had 5 point out of 5.

On the fifth i was paired with the eventual winner, hes from penang. In the game a had a huge advantage, but i blundered in the exchange by losing a tempo... arrhhhh just one tempo and the game is mine ..

On the six !!! the first time i lose my temper on a game. He's a U15 opponent and a friend's son ( didn't know it at the time).

7th round I was paired with another strong opponent, he blundered his queen and the game .. :) .

overall I got 6/7 point. not bad, and I was 1st runner up.. i guess my solkof was better because of my strong opponent, and all of my opponent get prizes. oh yea, my nephew got fifth for the U15 category with 4.5/7 point.

Great tournament for me, Alhamdulillah ...

Slim river 2011 Perak grandprix

Not much to tell .. it was 7 round rapid game with 20 minute time control. My first opponent was a kid, but you could not under estimate those little guys now days. I won my first, second and third game. At the fourth round i meet Fong Yit Ho, he's number 6 in Asean Sea Game selection. I lost on time with drawish position.

On round five i meet another kid. The kid had a look of overconfidence on him. He lost badly , one of the lesson i learn in chess is that don't be overconfidence over your opponent even if he is lower rated than yourself. In round six i blundered a piece and I just don't have a counter play for the piece, My opponent just trade our pieces and i just resign.

At the last round i meet Cikgu Asma, Mr Azman mentor (perak state OKU player) she's the coach for their team and I could not let my guard down. It was our first meetup on the board. I was 4 point to her 4.5 point. I played my KID setup and i think she's using an 150 attack, luckily I had studied the variation before and know the basic counter for it. we were fighting for control of the center where the game was still balance but then i capture white rook. By this time white was in trouble, she tried to attack but she end up losing a piece. by that time i was just simple exchange and promote to queen and mate.

The summary, I got 5 point out of 7. miss out of the prize money due to board 1-3 agree on draw. but it was a good tournament with the exception of my blunder on round six.

Hope I improve on my game on the next tournament... 

A game with Mr Sham

Hi .. on 27 April 2011 Mr sham and i played 3 round of chess .. the first round we agreed on a draw . I played as black and it was Rook + Knight vs Rook + Bishop ending with each side having 2 pawn . On the second game I lost on a spectacular tactic by Mr Sham .. WOW ! it was good ( i played as white).

On the third game, I played as black using my trusty pirc defence meanwhile Mr Sham was using Austrian attack against me. And on move 5 he played a3 , that kind of puzzle me and i have to rethink my counter attack.

Pak Mie VS me :p

This game is between Pak Mie and me on 14-4-2011 . We had two game's but sadly i didn't took time to record it . I think it was a highly positional game where we try to out maneuver each other. but at the end i trick pak mie to lock the queen side where pak mie could get initiative .. meanwhile i was controlling the center and massing an attack toward the black king.

this position was reach and  I saw an opportunity to grab a pawn. 



1. Bb5  Rc7  2. Bxd7 Rxd7  at this time i didnt  know either to grab the pawn using queen or pawn . but i decide to make a Queen trade with an exra pawn in the end game. 3 Qxe6+ Qxe6  i make an hasty move by capturing with the rook where  i should have analyst pawn capture  4. Rxe6 and here pak mie blundered 4. ... Rc7 ??    5. Bxf6 a free piece an Pak mie resign .

How it all started .

Well when i was a kid, i never really got a formal education in playing chess. My big brother used to play with me. I guess he kind of teach me tho rope's of chess . Well i always got beaten by him , but when i drew him once he never want to play with me again .

In school I didn't got involved in chess, the school didn't even have a chess set. ha ha ha ha .. Somehow back 5-6 years ago chess come back into my life like a tsunami . Once i was hooked there was no turning back. Want to know the story ..

At that time i worked in a petrol station. While on my daily bank run, i saw a banner of a chess tournament. Yup guys it was like a lightning strike. hey what the heck, i entered it . I entered category B for those that doesn't rating . Hey i actually got number 6 and got RM10.00 and the entry fee is ten bucks .. I could get a better places but i lost on a touch move rule. What do you expect it was my first tournament !! . Those guys on the tournament invite me to their chess hang-out it was at Limau Bali Jln Gopeng . So in my free time i went there. On my first time there it was like being in pool fill with shark and alligator. I was totally being preyed on. HaH !! break my spirit will you ! nope that make me work harder, now I could stand tall as them. Thanks to those guys for all that crushing lesson .

Now i played regularly on tournament. Still learning the move . Hope i Will get better in chess . I really love the game. And never forget I have a wife that always support me !! :)  

Another tournament missed

Ha !! didn't entered yesterday tournament in Taiping because it was full !!! 200 + + player ... anyway Well done to Pak Mi ( Arch nemesis  from police team ) in getting no 6 .. Well i just have to study more and prepare for the next tournament ..
